The project "Montēt: Re-imagining the Expo" is situated on Kipsala Island in Riga, aiming to change the use of the Riga Exposition Center into a key location for trade and cultural activities. The design combines traditional architectural styles with modern elements. This approach creates an environment that encourages community interaction and reflects local cultural identity.

Underlying Layout and Accessibility

The plan features a pedestrian plaza, market place, and outdoor pavilion, which work together to enhance connectivity. By encouraging movement and exploration, these spaces create an inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. Pathways are designed to echo the characteristics of the historic city center, making the venue easily walkable and engaging.

Exhibition Spaces and Versatility

At the core of the design are two exhibition spaces and several auditoriums, built to host a variety of events. Each auditorium can hold 250 people and has retractable seating that allows for easy adaptation during larger gatherings. This flexibility makes the venue suitable for trade fairs, cultural exhibitions, and community activities throughout the year.

Materiality and Cultural Resonance

The design features thatched reed detailing on the building's exterior. This choice connects the structure with Latvia's architectural heritage and adds a layer of warmth. The materials are selected to resonate with the local culture, reinforcing a sense of familiarity for users while ensuring sustainability.

Sustainable Urban Planning

The project addresses urban planning objectives by promoting a poly-centric approach to development. This means shifting activity away from the historic center to surrounding areas while revitalizing the urban space. Including local vendors in the market place supports sustainable economic practices and encourages community engagement, making the exposition center a vibrant hub for cultural and commercial interaction.

The incorporation of green spaces throughout the design enhances the environment and invites people to gather. It supports social interaction and fosters a lively community atmosphere.
