Textured Terraces of Reusable Urethane Faced Concrete Nestled Within Volcanic Terrain

Project in-detail

Elevated terraces of reusable urethane-faced concrete emerge from volcanic terrain, offering a unique vantage for exploration and interaction with the surrounding landscape, designed to enhance visitor engagement with nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated terraces integrate seamlessly with the volcanic landscape, enhancing user experience.
02
Pathways are designed to encourage exploration and provide varied viewpoints of the surroundings.
03
Locally sourced materials minimize environmental impact while promoting site-specific aesthetics.
04
Reusable urethane formwork creates unique textural surfaces, reducing construction waste.
05
The structural design anticipates geological activity, ensuring durability in a challenging environment.
The project "SHIFT" is a thoughtfully designed architectural intervention positioned on the edge of a volcano. It utilizes terraced landforms to create a seamless integration between the built environment and the natural landscape. This design, characterized by a series of interlocking terraces, responds to the contours of the site while enhancing accessibility and visitor experience. The design emphasizes a harmonious coexistence with the surrounding geological features, offering striking views and unique interactions with nature.

Terraced Design and Site Integration

The terraced configuration serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. Each level offers elevated views while creating structured gathering spaces for visitors. This approach allows for a more dynamic relationship with the landscape, encouraging exploration and engagement. The design employs concrete for topping slabs and retaining walls, coupled with reusable urethane form liners that add textural depth to the surfaces. Local materials, such as compacted fill and surface rocks, further establish a direct connection to the site, promoting sustainability by minimizing transportation impacts and reducing the carbon footprint.

Functional Elements and Visitor Engagement

Incorporating pathways that connect various terraces, the design enhances circulation throughout the site. These pathways guide visitors through a journey that deepens their interaction with the volcanic landscape. The use of terraces facilitates varied perspectives of the environment, encouraging continual exploration. The overall layout supports diverse functions, including spaces for reflection, social interaction, and educational activities about the local geology and ecology.

Innovative Materials and Sustainability Practices

The use of innovative materials distinguishes "SHIFT" from conventional architectural designs. The choice of reusable urethane form liners for texturing reflects a commitment to sustainable design practices, reducing waste while achieving complex forms. The integration of locally sourced materials not only enhances the aesthetic quality but also reinforces environmental responsibility. The careful selection of concrete for structural elements underscores durability and longevity, essential in a landscape subject to geological activity.

For a more in-depth understanding of the architectural plans, designs, and ideas that define this project, readers are encouraged to explore the full presentation of "SHIFT." Detailed architectural sections and plans reveal the thought processes behind the design, offering insights into how this project achieves its goals of sustainability and user engagement while harmonizing with its natural setting.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
