Tensegrity Observation Tower With Sustainable Timber Pathways Enhancing Wetland Engagement

Project in-detail

Utilizing a tensegrity structure and sustainable timber pathways, the design elevates visitor perspectives while promoting an immersive engagement with the wetland ecosystem.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes a tensegrity structural system that minimizes material use while maximizing stability.
02
Incorporates sustainable timber pathways designed for accessibility and visitor interaction.
03
Features cross-laminated timber panels for enhanced durability and aesthetic appeal.
04
Integrates charred wooden shingles to provide natural weather resistance and visual texture.
05
Offers panoramic viewing platforms that encourage ecological awareness and wildlife observation.
The architectural design project located within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve serves as an exemplary model of how modern architecture can harmonize with natural ecosystems. This project emphasizes sustainability and ecological awareness, providing a dedicated space for wildlife observation while inviting visitors to engage with the environment. The design encapsulates the essence of thoughtful architecture, balancing human activity with the preservation of nature.

The structure consists of a multi-level observation tower accompanied by a series of boardwalks. These elements are strategically placed to maximize views of the wetland while minimizing disturbance to the habitat. The tower elevates visitors to an optimal vantage point, enhancing their experience of the landscape, while the boardwalks facilitate access and movement through the reserve. This thoughtful design approach fosters an educational interaction, increasing awareness of the ecological significance of the wetland.

Innovative Design Approaches

This project stands out due to its use of tensegrity as a structural system. This technique employs a combination of cables and struts to create a lightweight yet sturdy framework, reducing material usage while maintaining structural integrity. The use of steel cable railings ensures safety without obstructing the views, allowing for an uninterrupted visual connection with the surrounding wetlands.

The material choices in this project further contribute to its unique character. The integration of sustainable timber for decking creates a natural aesthetic that complements the environment, while the use of metal decking and concrete foundations increases durability and stability. This careful selection of materials not only reinforces the architectural concept but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability.

Functional Aspects and User Engagement

Visitor access has been a primary consideration in the design. The boardwalks are designed with gradual slopes and easily navigable ramps, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. Educational displays are strategically positioned throughout the observation areas, providing insights regarding the flora and fauna present in the wetland. The overall layout encourages exploration and engagement, promoting a deeper understanding of wildlife habitats.

This architecture offers a sophisticated interplay of form and function, allowing visitors to enjoy an immersive experience in nature. The architectural designs evoke a sense of presence within the landscape, encouraging thoughtful interaction with the environment.

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
