Sustainable Oak and IPE Structure That Harmonizes With Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

An expansive cantilevered platform constructed from sustainable oak and IPE steel integrates seamlessly into the volcanic landscape, providing an observation space that encourages contemplation and connection with nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Expansive platform utilizes cantilevered design to minimize ground disturbance.
02
Modular segments adapt to the unique geological features of the site.
03
Extruded spaces provide opportunities for individual reflection amid vast landscapes.
04
Materials chosen prioritize local sustainability with oak and IPE steel.
05
Transparent safety glass ensures unobstructed views of the volcanic terrain.
The architectural project “Nemrut Volcano Eyes” is a carefully designed viewpoint situated in a volcanic landscape, emphasizing sustainability and user engagement with the natural environment. This structure fosters a connection between visitors and the breathtaking surroundings while maintaining respect for the ecological integrity of the site. The design functions as an observation platform, allowing individuals and groups to immerse themselves in the expansive views without disrupting the delicate ecosystem.

The primary architectural elements of the project include a cantilevered platform that extends over the landscape and is supported by innovative modular segments. These segments serve both structural and functional purposes while minimizing ground disturbance. The inclusion of three extruded spaces from the main platform offers intimate areas for individual reflection, enhancing the user experience while promoting a sense of solitude amid the expansive surroundings. Vertical circulation is integrated seamlessly within the design, ensuring easy access from the ground to the elevated platform.

Innovative design approaches set “Nemrut Volcano Eyes” apart from conventional architectural projects. The careful selection of materials such as oak wood, safety glass, and IPE steel reflects a commitment to sustainability while providing functional strength. Oak wood contributes to a warm aesthetic and maintains a tactile connection to nature, while safety glass ensures unobstructed views. IPE steel is used for its structural qualities, allowing for an elegant yet durable support system.

Moreover, the project prioritizes environmental respect by ensuring that the natural habitat remains intact. The modular design allows the structure to adapt effectively to the unique geological features of the site, providing stability without extensive ground modification. This approach encourages visitors to engage with the volcanic landscape in a meaningful way, reinforcing the idea of coexistence between architecture and nature.

“Nemrut Volcano Eyes” exemplifies a holistic approach to architectural design, merging functional demands with environmental considerations. The incorporation of individual reflective spaces alongside communal observation areas enhances the visitor experience, inviting deeper engagement with the landscape.

For in-depth insights into the architectural concepts and structural details, it is encouraged to explore further elements such as architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural designs related to this project. Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
