Steel Structure Interacting with Natural Terrain in Iceland's Landscape

Project in-detail

Leveraging a steel frame that harmonizes with the Icelandic landscape, the structure offers a unique viewing experience while maintaining a minimal ecological footprint through the use of recycled materials.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design incorporates a steel frame that facilitates structural stability while remaining lightweight.
02
Narrow openings enhance natural light penetration, creating dynamic internal environments.
03
Construction utilizes recycled aluminum plates for cladding, emphasizing sustainability.
04
The pathways encourage direct engagement with the surrounding natural landscape.
05
Vertical orientation mirrors the tectonic features of the Icelandic terrain, promoting visual synergy.
The "Disappearing Tower" is an architectural design project located in Iceland, characterized by its minimalistic approach and deep engagement with the surrounding landscape. This structure aims to create a seamless relationship between built form and natural environments, emphasizing the physical features of the site while reducing visual intrusion. Its design facilitates both exploration and reflection, encouraging users to engage with the Icelandic scenery in a meaningful way.

The project serves multiple functions, including a viewing platform and an experiential space that connects visitors with the area's unique geological and cultural context. The architectural layout incorporates pathways that navigate through the landscape, fostering interaction with the natural elements surrounding the tower and allowing for an immersive experience.

The tower itself is primarily constructed of durable materials that enhance its sustainability profile. It features a skeleton of steel frames, providing structural stability while remaining lightweight. Corrugated metal sheets form the external walls and roof, contributing to a streamlined aesthetic that reflects local building practices. Recycled aluminum plates are utilized for the cladding, aligning with sustainable design principles and Iceland's commitment to environmental preservation.

The unique design approaches of the "Disappearing Tower" include its emphasis on form and materiality. The tower's height and vertical orientation echo the tectonic landscape of Iceland, promoting a visual dialogue with natural formations. Strategic placement of narrow openings facilitates natural light penetration, creating changing internal environments throughout the day. This play of light contributes to the tower's ephemeral quality, allowing it to seemingly blend into the changing skies and landscapes.

A significant aspect of the project is its unobtrusive nature; the design integrates carefully with the existing terrain, preserving the ecological integrity of the site. The architecture operates as an element of the landscape, dissolving into its surroundings and minimizing impact. This approach not only enhances the visitor experience but also underscores the importance of context in contemporary architectural design.

The pathways and viewpoints provide accessibility while maintaining a respectful distance from sensitive natural forms. This engagement with the site is indicative of a deeper understanding of sustainable architecture, emphasizing the balance between human activity and the preservation of natural landscapes.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
