Staggered Platforms of Timber Offer Unique Vantage Points in Natural Landscape Observation

Project in-detail

Staggered timber platforms create a dynamic ascending path that integrates viewing windows with the natural landscape, enhancing the observation experience for visitors exploring the environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Staggered platforms create an interactive journey, offering varying perspectives of the landscape.
02
Design incorporates charred wooden shingles for enhanced durability and texture.
03
Viewing windows are strategically spaced to facilitate natural light and visual connection with surroundings.
04
The bent A-frame structure optimizes structural efficiency while maintaining a lightweight appearance.
05
Accessible ramps ensure inclusivity for all visitors, promoting diverse engagement with the space.
The project titled "Tower // Journey" represents an innovative approach to the traditional observation tower. Located within a natural setting, the design emphasizes the visitor experience by framing the ascent as a gradual exploration rather than merely reaching a height. The primary function of the tower is to provide an immersive viewpoint that connects visitors with the landscape, facilitating both observation and interaction with the surrounding environment.

The architectural design breaks from conventional forms by orienting the tower horizontally. This layout allows for a series of ramped platforms that guide visitors upwards in a nonlinear path. Important elements of the project include strategically placed viewing windows that align with the landscape features and promote a dynamic visual connection to the natural surroundings. The wooden structure, featuring 50 x 50 mm wooden framing and wooden decking, integrates sustainably sourced materials, reinforcing the project's commitment to environmental harmony.

Unique Design Approaches Promoting Engagement

The primary distinction of "Tower // Journey" lies in its user-centered design ethos. The ramped pathways and open observation areas are inclusive, catering to diverse visitor mobility needs. This architectural choice not only enhances accessibility but also encourages prolonged engagement with the space, allowing visitors to pause and reflect at multiple viewpoints.

Another innovative aspect is the staggered vertical slats of the design, which provide both structural support and visual interest. These elements create a rhythm that mirrors the natural topography, enabling a seamless integration of the built form within the landscape. The design also employs bracing frames and secure lag screws, ensuring structural integrity while maintaining a lightweight appearance.

Functional Aspects of the Design

In terms of functionality, the tower provides critical services for visitors, including safe walkways and gathering spaces. The careful consideration of spatial layout fosters interaction among users, promoting a sense of community within the environment. Additionally, the materials selected, such as wood and metal fasteners, function in unison to create a resilient yet inviting structure. The architectural design facilitates ventilation and light penetration, enhancing the overall user experience.
