Staggered Forms With Exposed Concrete And Large Glass Facades Enhance Compact Living

Project in-detail

Staggered, modular forms clad in exposed concrete and large glass panels create a visually compelling and energy-efficient dwelling that redefines compact living.
5 key facts about this project
01
Staggered modular forms enhance privacy and innovative spatial organization.
02
Exposed concrete facade integrates sustainably with the natural environment.
03
Large glass panels optimize natural light while promoting outdoor connectivity.
04
Energy-efficient design incorporates a photovoltaic array for renewable energy.
05
Interior finishes utilize plywood for warmth and tactile contrast against concrete.
The project under analysis features a modern architectural design known as the "3D Dwelling." This residential structure is characterized by an innovative spatial organization that maximizes functionality within a compact footprint. The design emphasizes a harmonious relationship between indoor and outdoor environments, utilizing modular zones to create distinct living areas.

The core concept of the 3D Dwelling revolves around efficient living, where each spatial unit serves a specific function while maintaining visual connectivity. The staggered arrangement of cuboid forms enhances privacy for residents while allowing natural light to permeate all living spaces. The project is executed with a clear focus on sustainability, integrating energy-efficient systems to minimize environmental impact.

The 3D Dwelling represents a shift towards adaptable living spaces, catering to diverse modern lifestyles. This adaptability is achieved through the fluidity of the design, which allows for variations in how residents utilize each zone over time.

Emphasis on Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

One of the distinguishing features of the 3D Dwelling is its commitment to energy efficiency. The design incorporates a photovoltaic array, facilitating energy generation and reducing dependency on conventional energy sources. This integration not only enhances the structure’s sustainability but also aligns with contemporary architectural values focused on minimizing ecological footprints.

The materiality of the project further emphasizes its innovative nature. The use of exposed concrete for the exterior provides structural stability while contributing to a minimalist aesthetic. Large glass windows enhance the connection with the outdoor landscape, promoting natural ventilation and lighting. Meanwhile, plywood is utilized for interior finishes and furnishings, adding warmth to the otherwise stark materials.

Spatial Organization and Functionality

The spatial organization within the 3D Dwelling reflects a thoughtful analysis of functionality. Key areas include designated spaces for living, working, storage, and outdoor interaction. The arrangement of these zones ensures that residents can experience a seamless transition between various domestic activities.

The outdoor spaces are intricately integrated into the design, serving as an extension of the indoor environment. The staggered heights of the structure create terraces and elevated views, enhancing the overall living experience. This approach encourages interactions with the surrounding landscape while maintaining individual privacy.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
