Spiral Design Emphasizing Local Timber and Biophilic Elements for Cyclist Amenities

Project in-detail

A spiral structure constructed from local timber integrates biophilic design principles, providing essential amenities for cyclists along the Eurovelo route.
5 key facts about this project
01
Spiral structure enhances vertical movement and user engagement.
02
Modular design allows for customized cyclist amenities based on varying needs.
03
Integration of biophilic elements promotes natural light and a connection to the environment.
04
Sustainable materials selected include locally sourced timber for reduced ecological impact.
05
The charred wooden shingles provide both aesthetic appeal and weather resistance.

The project is an architectural design for a Velo Stop located along the Eurovelo 6 cycling route. It serves to provide necessary amenities for cyclists, including rest areas, bike parking, and refreshment services. The design emphasizes functionality while creating an inviting space for users. This structure embodies a commitment to sustainability and local context, reflecting an understanding of the unique needs of cyclists on long-distance journeys.

Design Approach and Unique Features

This Velo Stop distinguishes itself through its modular design. The structure comprises three distinct modules: Basic, Comfortable, and Deluxe. Each module addresses varying user requirements, from essential services in the Basic Module to enhanced amenities like sleeping areas in the Deluxe Module. This flexibility allows the project to cater to a broad spectrum of cyclists.

The architectural design adopts a spiral form, inspired by the wheel and historically influenced by watchtowers. This form not only serves as an aesthetic choice but also creates an intuitive pathway for movement. The integration of vertical circulation through a central spiral staircase encourages interaction within the space while providing vantage points for users to observe the surroundings.

Sustainable Material Use and Environmental Consideration

The construction materials are selected with sustainability in mind. Key materials include wood, glass, steel, concrete, and plywood. Wood is used for cladding and structural elements, imparting warmth and integrating the project into the natural environment. Glass elements enhance transparency and light while connecting interior spaces with the outdoor landscape. Steel provides structural support, and concrete forms a durable foundation.

The project’s architectural design embraces biophilic principles, allowing for natural light and airflow to permeate the space. This creates a comfortable environment for users, ultimately supporting their well-being and engagement with nature. The emphasis on accessibility and minimal ecological impact aligns with the project's focus on enriching the cycling experience along the Eurovelo route.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
