Surya is an architectural design project located in a clearing within the New Zealand bush. It serves as a spiritual and meditative sanctuary, focused on creating a connection between the occupants and the natural surroundings. The project embodies the principles of sustainability, utilizing natural light and organic materials to foster an environment conducive to reflection and well-being. The design approach prioritizes harmony with nature while promoting the use of renewable energy, particularly through the conscious integration of sunlight into the structure.

The architectural form of Surya is primarily circular, symbolizing unity and continuity. This design facilitates a fluid transition between different spaces within the building, enabling occupants to navigate the interior with ease. The layered approach of the top and ground levels provides diverse experiences, from elevated meditation platforms to intimate ground-level spaces. The layout emphasizes intuitive movement through the building, enhancing user engagement with both the interior and the exterior environments.

Thoughtful material selection is a key aspect of the design. The primary material is sustainably sourced wood, which not only contributes to the warmth of the interior spaces but also emphasizes a connection to the surrounding landscape. Glass elements are carefully positioned to maximize daylight penetration, allowing for unobstructed views of the natural setting. Stone is utilized in the construction for its structural integrity, anchoring the design to the earth.

The project features significant elements that enhance its functionality and represent its core concept. The entrance ramp provides an accessible entry point while inviting visitors to ascend into the central space. The wooden enclosure serves as both a protective shell and a connector to the outdoor environment, filtering the sunlight that enters. Prominent features include a sky window that connects occupants to the cosmos, and an altar designed to support spiritual practices, reinforcing the project's meditative purpose.

Surya's unique design approach focuses on the interplay of light and space. Sunlight is strategically harnessed to illuminate key areas throughout the day, fostering a sense of energy and vitality. The architectural flow aligns with natural light patterns, accentuating the building's role as a sanctuary for renewal and introspection. The overall experience is further enriched by the careful integration of the structure within its natural context, preserving local ecology and promoting biodiversity.
