Re-ROOTING Skyscrapers is an architectural design located in Central Jakarta, Indonesia. The focus is on addressing the challenges of urban living in a city where high-rise buildings stand side by side with traditional Kampung settlements. The overall design concept aims to create a skyscraper that integrates with its environment both above and below ground, promoting a sense of connectivity and community among its inhabitants.

Design Concept

The concept draws inspiration from Jules Verne's "Voyage au Centre de la Terre," leading to a fresh approach toward high-rise structures. The design envisions a tower that acts like a rooted tree, symbolizing stability while responding to Jakarta's rapid urbanization. This rooted concept not only signifies a strong foundation but also tackles issues such as ground sinking and the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels.

Architectural Features

Key elements of the design include extruded gardens that serve important ecological and recreational purposes. These gardens offer necessary green spaces in a densely populated area, enhancing residents' quality of life. They also help to promote biodiversity. In addition, a light hat or beacon is included; it functions as both practical lighting and a visual marker within the urban landscape.

Programmatic Elements

The tower accommodates a range of uses, such as office spaces, retail areas, and transportation options. This variety of functions is designed to create a lively urban hub. It encourages social interaction and economic activity, changing the skyscraper into something more than just a tall building. It becomes a vital part of the community, meeting the diverse needs of Jakarta’s inhabitants.

Structural Considerations

To address the risk of seismic activity, the project employs innovative building techniques. It uses existing foundation practices alongside a mangrove-like superstructure that provides stability while reflecting natural resilience. The connected leg structure adds to the overall stability. It allows for the use of excavated ground in the design of the roof system.

Re-ROOTING Skyscrapers represents a thoughtful blend of design elements. It stands as a landmark in the urban landscape while maintaining a close relationship with the environment. This integration highlights a balance of function and sustainability, responding to the needs of the community and the challenges of the modern city.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
