05
Sustainable materials, including engineered wood, support eco-friendly building practices throughout the project.

The "Pointer" is an architectural project situated within the Al Wathba Nature Reserve in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This facility serves as a visitor center and observation point, aimed at enhancing the experience for researchers and tourists while promoting ecological awareness. The design efficiently integrates into the surrounding environment, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and respect for local biodiversity. Through careful planning and material selection, the building demonstrates how architecture can harmonize with nature.

Design Integration with Environment The "Pointer" emphasizes a seamless connection with its natural surroundings. Pathways within the site are designed to follow the contours of the landscape, creating a natural flow that guides visitors. The observation points are elevated to provide unobstructed views of the reserve, allowing users to engage with wildlife in a non-intrusive manner. The use of reflective glazing minimizes visual impact and enhances environmental interaction, ensuring that the architecture remains a passive element within the ecosystem.

Sustainable Material Selection Materials used in the construction of "Pointer" are carefully selected for their sustainability and functionality. Prefabricated concrete serves as the primary structural component, offering durability and reducing construction waste. Wooden laminates throughout the interior create a warm atmosphere that contrasts with the exterior landscape. The incorporation of sustainable wood for flooring further reinforces the project's commitment to eco-friendly practices. This thoughtful approach to materiality not only enhances the building's aesthetic appeal but also aligns with the principles of sustainable architecture.

Visitor Engagement and Educational Focus The design prioritizes visitor engagement through interactive elements. Multi-level viewing platforms facilitate observation of the surrounding wildlife without compromising their habitat. Enclosed yet transparent spaces allow for educational programs and research activities, emphasizing the importance of ecological conservation. The architecture's form and organization encourage exploration and curiosity, making the visitor experience both informative and enjoyable.

For further insights into the "Pointer" project, including architectural plans, sections, and design details, readers are encouraged to explore the project presentation. Examining these elements offers a deeper understanding of the architectural ideas and unique approaches that define this significant contribution to the Al Wathba Nature Reserve.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
