Reclaimed Bricks and Vineyards in a Sustainable Wine Tasting Retreat

Project in-detail

Recovered bricks from existing structures create a connection to the site's history in a sustainable wine tasting retreat that integrates educational spaces with a landscaped vineyard.
5 key facts about this project
01
Recovered bricks are used from demolished structures to create a historical connection.
02
A learning square is designed around rows of vines for educational purposes.
03
Five guest houses feature private patios enhancing personal privacy.
04
The layout prioritizes both public engagement and secluded living spaces.
05
Sustainability is emphasized through material reuse and minimal environmental impact.

The project is located near the center of Spello, surrounded by agricultural fields and overlooking Subasio Mount. It emphasizes sustainability and creates spaces for wine tasting and education about viticulture. The design concept focuses on connecting the existing landscape with new structures, blending the built environment with nature for a cohesive experience.

Wine Tasting Area

The design includes a wine tasting area that features two kitchens, two dining and tasting rooms, and a central wine storage space. This arrangement is purposeful, allowing for wine tasting while promoting social interaction among visitors. It creates an engaging atmosphere, encouraging participants to connect with the scenery surrounding them.

Learning Square

Next to the wine tasting area is a learning square, arranged around rows of vines meant for educational purposes in viticulture. This space is designed to invite interaction with the environment, framing views and transitioning smoothly to residential areas. It enhances the user experience by creating a deeper connection with the land.

Guest Houses

Five guest houses are part of the layout, each with distinct day and night spaces. The daytime areas open outwards, encouraging connection with the outdoors, while the nighttime zones provide access to private patios, ensuring privacy. This thoughtful arrangement addresses both social and personal needs, striking a balance between community and solitude.

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability drives the design, particularly in the approach to materials. Previous structures on the site were demolished to recover bricks, which are reused in the new design. This choice emphasizes ecological responsibility and helps to reduce costs while maintaining a link to the local history.

The design incorporates a play of light and shadow, where new structures blend with the landscape. This creates an atmosphere that respects simplicity and function, reflecting the region’s agricultural background while providing a calm retreat for visitors.
