Rammed Earth Structure Featuring Spiral Staircase Overlooking Geothermal Landscape

Project in-detail

A rammed earth observation tower with a spiral staircase and expansive glass openings seamlessly integrates with Iceland's geothermal landscape, providing a distinctive space for exploration and engagement with the natural environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with locally sourced rammed earth, the tower harmonizes with its geological context.
02
The spiral staircase creates continuous engagement with shifting views of the surrounding landscape.
03
Large glass openings are strategically positioned to frame specific geological features.
04
Public and private spaces are carefully arranged to enhance communal interactions.
05
The design incorporates geothermal elements, emphasizing environmental sensitivity and sustainability.
"The Rift" is an architectural project located in the geologically diverse region of Iceland, particularly near the Grotja caves. This observation tower serves as a focal point for visitors to engage with the surrounding landscape dominated by tectonic activity. The design promotes exploration and interaction with the natural environment, offering a space that reflects both human curiosity and the geological uniqueness of the site.

The project is structured to guide visitors from the base to a viewing platform at the top, representing a journey through various spatial experiences. Visitors ascend through a series of voids and solid forms, creating a dynamic interaction with the light and the environment. This arrangement emphasizes a clear progression from darker, enclosed spaces at the base to the open viewing deck, enhancing the understanding of the site’s geology and landscape.

Unique Design Approaches
One distinctive feature of "The Rift" is its architectural articulation that mimics the surrounding geological formations. The façade integrates rammed earth, steel, and expanded metal mesh, emphasizing both durability and natural aesthetics. This material palette reflects local resources while ensuring sustainable design principles. The structural integrity of the tower allows it to stand as a significant element in the landscape while maintaining physical and visual connections with the environment.

The incorporation of large glass openings not only provides daylight but also frames specific views of the landscape, allowing visitors to experience the topography in a more intimate manner. The spiral staircase creates an engaging navigational strategy that allows visitors to constantly experience shifting perspectives as they ascend, reinforcing the connection between structure and landscape.

Experiential Spaces
The design includes various functional areas such as a café, exhibition spaces, and offices. These areas are purposefully arranged to promote both public interaction and individual contemplation. The configuration provides a layered experience, allowing visitors to gather and engage before continuing to the observation area. Each level is designed to transition visitors gradually from communal spaces to the more elevated and solitary viewing platform.

This thoughtful organization supports the overall concept of exploration while also addressing the practical needs of different visitor groups. The interplay of open and enclosed spaces maintains a continuous engagement with the surrounding environment, facilitating a deeper connection with the geological context.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
