Rammed Earth Structure Embracing Natural Light with Community Spaces in a Vineyard Setting

Project in-detail

Constructed with rammed earth and local cork, the facility integrates seamlessly with its vineyard landscape, providing a sustainable environment for wine tasting and community gatherings.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed primarily from rammed earth for thermal efficiency and low environmental impact.
02
Local cork finishes enhance acoustics and contribute to a warm interior ambiance.
03
The building's curved design follows the natural contours of the landscape, minimizing visual disruption.
04
Extensive glazing optimizes natural light and offers unobstructed views of the surrounding vineyard.
05
A green roof helps manage rainwater and promotes local biodiversity while insulating the building.
The architectural project “Earthy Notes” embodies a harmonious relationship between built form and the natural environment, specifically designed to function as a winery and wine-tasting facility. The structure integrates sustainable building practices with an aesthetic that respects the surrounding vineyard landscape. Utilizing locally sourced materials and traditional construction methods, “Earthy Notes” achieves efficient energy performance while creating inviting and functional spaces for visitors.

Emphasizing a commitment to sustainability, the project is primarily constructed using rammed earth, a method that provides structural integrity, excellent thermal mass, and minimal environmental impact. This choice not only reflects local building traditions but also aligns with modern architectural principles of energy efficiency. Complementing the rammed earth are interior finishes of Portuguese cork, which enhance insulation and create a warm atmosphere. The extensive glazing throughout the facility allows natural light to permeate the interior while providing occupants with expansive views of the vineyard, reinforcing the connection between the indoors and outdoors.

Design Intent and Unique Features

What sets “Earthy Notes” apart from typical winery designs is its thoughtful approach to integration with the landscape. The building is partially sunk into the hill, which minimizes visual intrusion and enhances thermal regulation. The organic, flowing forms of the architecture follow the site's topography, allowing for improved aerodynamics and natural ventilation. Strategically placed operable windows facilitate airflow, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling and heating systems.

The layout prioritizes communal experiences, featuring shared spaces that encourage interaction among visitors. Informal seating arrangements and communal tables are designed to foster social engagement, aligning with the culture of wine tasting. Furthermore, the use of a green roof contributes to biodiversity while enhancing insulation and reducing runoff, illustrating a comprehensive strategy to maintain environmental equilibrium.

Architectural Solutions and Practical Functionality

“Earthy Notes” pays particular attention to functionality in its spatial organization. The design incorporates flexible spaces that can adapt to different types of events, from intimate gatherings to larger community functions. Each area is connected through a logical flow, leading visitors seamlessly from the exterior vineyard environment into the carefully curated interior spaces.

Rammed earth construction is complemented by wood elements, which are used for both structural integrity and aesthetic warmth. The choice of materials reflects local resources and craftsmanship while ensuring durability and sustainability. The thermal performance of the rammed earth walls regulates indoor temperatures, creating a comfortable environment year-round without excessive energy consumption.

For a deeper understanding of this architectural project, including insights on architectural plans, sections, and design elements, it is recommended to explore the project presentation. This exploration provides further details on the innovative design strategies that define “Earthy Notes,” reinforcing its role as a model of contemporary winery architecture.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
