Rammed Earth Retreat with Cantilevered Slate Roof in Forested Landscape

Project in-detail

Rammed earth walls and a cantilevered slate roof create a seamless connection with the surrounding forest, providing a tranquil retreat designed for yoga and meditation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rammed earth construction enhances thermal performance and reduces environmental impact.
02
Cantilevered slate roof provides protection while maximizing views of the landscape.
03
Flexible interior layout accommodates varying group sizes for yoga practice.
04
Natural ventilation strategies improve air quality and comfort within the space.
05
Integrated outdoor terraces encourage connection with the surrounding forest environment.
The Yoga Refuge in the Woods is an architectural project located in a mountainous region of Portugal. This structure is designed as a retreat specifically for yoga practitioners, providing a space that fosters relaxation and meditation while integrating harmoniously with its natural surroundings. By utilizing a minimal footprint, the design emphasizes the importance of the landscape, creating a seamless relationship between the building and its environment.

The primary function of the project is to serve as a wellness space where users can engage in yoga and meditation. The design includes dedicated areas for yoga practice, community gatherings, and individual reflection. By making use of the existing topography, the structure maintains its environmental integrity while accommodating diverse user needs.

The architectural design features a flowing form that mirrors the natural curves of the site. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic quality of the building but also promotes a sense of connection with the forest and its elements. Large windows are strategically placed to maximize natural light and offer panoramic views, effectively blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors.

Unique Design Approaches 1: Integration with Nature
One of the distinguishing features of this project is its integration with the surrounding landscape. The building's form and materials are selected specifically to harmonize with the forest environment. The roof, made from local slate, and walls of rammed earth reflect traditional construction techniques while offering durability and thermal stability. This choice of materials enhances the building's sustainability credentials and minimizes its ecological footprint.

Unique Design Approaches 2: Flexibility and Adaptability
The interior layout promotes flexibility, with sliding walls allowing spaces to adjust according to the number of participants or the type of activity. This adaptability is crucial for a yoga retreat, accommodating various group sizes and activities ranging from individual practice to larger workshops. Elevating the flooring aids in managing water drainage on the hilly terrain, enhancing both functionality and design.

The architectural design of the Yoga Refuge in the Woods exemplifies a thoughtful balance of function, materiality, and environment.
