Rammed Earth Retreat Embracing Nature in Latvia

Project in-detail

Constructed from rammed earth, this retreat harmonizes with Latvia's natural landscape while offering poets a serene environment for reflection and creativity.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rammed earth construction reduces environmental impact while connecting the building to its natural surroundings.
02
The design draws inspiration from 12th-century Latvian Christian architecture, reflecting local heritage.
03
Guest accommodations are strategically positioned to offer privacy and forest views, enhancing user experience.
04
A central tower serves as a multifunctional space for exhibitions and community events.
05
The integration of public and private spaces promotes both social interaction and individual reflection.

The Poetry Cloister is located in Latvia and is designed to create a communal yet intimate environment for poets. The design concept emphasizes spaces that encourage social interactions while also providing opportunities for personal reflection. The building integrates with the surrounding natural landscape, serving as a retreat for creativity and inspiration.

Spatial Organization

The layout features a compact arrangement of functional spaces that reduces fragmentation across the site. Public programs and accommodations are found in the northern and western sections, forming an enclosure that blocks noise from neighboring roads. This design creates a central court that acts as a gathering space for residents.

Private Retreats

Guest accommodations are located in the southern and eastern buildings, designed to provide privacy while offering views of the nearby forest. This careful separation of public and private areas allows for both community engagement and individual contemplation, meeting the varying needs of its users.

Central Tower

A central tower serves as the main focus of the design, intended for exhibitions, lectures, and public events. This element contributes to the variety of functions in the project and invites participation from both residents and visitors, enhancing the overall experience of the space.

Historic Context and Materiality

The design draws inspiration from historical architecture linked to Latvian Christianity, which dates back to the 12th century. This connection helps to create a sense of continuity between past and present. The project makes use of rammed earth and wood as key materials. These choices reflect local building traditions and ensure a connection with the landscape. The different textures of these materials create a warm atmosphere, encouraging occupants to engage thoughtfully with their surroundings.
