The Blue Clay Country Spa is located in Latvia, designed as a place for healing and connection. It focuses on wellness, bringing together local traditions and modern sustainable practices. The main feature of the site is a spa that sits above a lake, creating a calming environment that encourages relaxation and family interaction. The layout promotes openness while still providing private areas for guests.

Architectural Concept

The design centers around three key ideas: the use of clay in building, the health benefits of sauna traditions, and the importance of family. The spa is the main attraction, featuring two therapy rooms with private facilities. This design allows for individual treatment while supporting family bonding. Pathways link the various spaces together, making it easy for guests to move around and enjoy both communal and private moments.

Material Selection

Rammed clay is a primary material used for internal walls, chosen for its ability to manage temperature efficiently. This material choice reflects a commitment to environmentally friendly building methods. The framework incorporates locally sourced and reclaimed wood, reducing environmental impact and supporting local resources. Skylights throughout the structure allow natural light to fill the spaces, contributing to a warm ambiance and reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Sustainability Features

Active and passive sustainability measures are integral to the design. Active systems include wood burners and solar energy, ensuring that the spa is self-sufficient for heating and hot water needs. A unique water jacket system circulates heated water for under-floor heating, enhancing comfort. Passive systems, like well-placed chimneys, take advantage of natural ventilation, ensuring fresh air flows through the building without the need for mechanical systems.

Water Management Systems

Water management is handled thoughtfully in this design. Rainwater collection systems direct water from the roof into underground storage, preventing freezing issues during winter. Additionally, greywater reuse systems allow wastewater to be repurposed for irrigation, helping sustain the local vegetation and supporting the surrounding ecosystem. This practical approach shows a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The Blue Clay Country Spa also features a natural pool adorned with local plants. This addition promotes a connection between the built environment and nature, enhancing the overall sense of calm and community found at the spa.
