Pyramidal Roof Structure Integrating Local Wood for a Compact Sleeping Pod

Project in-detail

The use of a pyramidal roof and local wood creates a compact sleeping pod that integrates seamlessly into its forested surroundings, providing a tranquil residential space for visitors at the Vale de Moses yoga retreat.
5 key facts about this project
01
Pyramidal roof design maximizes natural light and practicality.
02
Three inhabitable columns house essential amenities while maintaining openness.
03
Local wood construction enhances environmental sensitivity and aesthetic coherence.
04
Operable skylights provide ventilation and views of the starry sky.
05
Compact footprint allows seamless integration into the forest environment.

The Four Poster Pod is a compact architectural design project located within the Vale de Moses yoga retreat. This project focuses on creating a functional sleeping pod, embodying the principles of minimalism while maintaining a close relationship with its natural surroundings. Encompassing an area of 13 square meters, the pod is engineered to provide essential living functions. This design serves as both a practical accommodation and a contemplative space for visitors to engage with nature.

The central concept of the Four Poster Pod lies in its structural simplicity, which consists of three inhabitable columns that house necessary facilities while allowing the sleeping area to float between them. This approach not only maximizes the use of space but also emphasizes openness and air circulation, promoting tranquility and relaxation. The design incorporates a straightforward layout that facilitates efficient functionality while encouraging a strong connection to the forest environment.

Sustainable Material Choices

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the Four Poster Pod’s design. The primary material utilized is local wood, which not only integrates the pod seamlessly into its setting but also minimizes transportation impacts. The walls and roof are constructed with vertical wood cladding, providing aesthetic continuity with the timber of the surrounding trees. Other notable materials include concrete for foundation stability, metal flashing for roof durability, plywood for structural integrity, and glass for large folding windows and skylights, ensuring generous natural light and views into the surroundings.

Innovative Design Elements

Unique aspects of the Four Poster Pod enhance its functionality and user experience. The modular design features a pyramidal roof that enhances visual interest while efficiently directing rainwater away from the structure. An operable skylight positioned in the roof allows occupants to experience stargazing, merging the indoor and outdoor atmospheres.

Internally, the pod accommodates a sleeping platform elevated to offer expansive views through strategically placed windows. Essential features such as storage areas and compact facilities for a composting toilet and water supply are discreetly integrated within the pod's framework, preserving the minimal aesthetic while ensuring all essential needs are met. Additionally, the raised deck creates an accessible entry point while maintaining a gentle transition to the surrounding landscape.

For further exploration of the architectural plans, sections, and design details of the Four Poster Pod, interested individuals should review the project presentation to gain deeper insights into this thoughtful architectural endeavor.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
