The welcome portal at GAUJA National Park is designed to blend into its stunning natural surroundings, serving as an entry point for visitors. Located in a region rich with biodiversity, the portal enhances the experience of those arriving at the park. The design concept focuses on life and nature while seamlessly merging architectural elements with ecological considerations.

Materiality and Sustainability

Recycled materials are a key feature of the design, specifically PVC slats that mimic the fibers used by local birds for nesting. This approach not only creates a visual relationship with the native wildlife but also highlights a commitment to sustainability. By using these materials, the structure remains lightweight and integrates naturally into the landscape.

Form and Conceptual Framework

Inspired by the structure of DNA, the form reflects the intricate connections found in natural ecosystems. This choice goes beyond mere aesthetic appeal; it symbolizes the essential relationships that support life. The design communicates a narrative that emphasizes the importance of biodiversity and the processes that sustain it.

Visitor Engagement and Experience

The portal design prioritizes functionality, providing shelter and guidance to visitors entering the park. Light filters through the PVC slats, creating patterns of shadow that enhance the surroundings, making the space inviting and engaging. The design encourages exploration and interaction, fostering a connection with the natural environment.

As visitors approach, the moving patterns of light and shadow on the portal’s surface create an experience that resonates with the surrounding forest, echoing the vibrant life within GAUJA National Park.
