The Jaunkalsnava SBMC (Stone Barn Meditation Camp) is located in Latvia, a region celebrated for its lush greenery and serene landscapes. The facility aims to blend meditation practices with ecotourism, providing visitors with a space for reflection and connection to nature. The design is centered on preserving the old stone barn, which serves as a foundational element in the new construction. By honoring historical structures, the design creates a link between the past and the present while fostering a tranquil environment for all who visit.

Preservation and Integration

A notable aspect of the design is its commitment to preserving the existing stone barn walls. These walls are integral to the overall aesthetic and structural integrity of the project. They help maintain a sense of history and context, grounding the new building within its landscape. The new design fits comfortably within these walls, ensuring that minimal alterations were made, which respects both the site and its legacy.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the guest house includes four distinct levels, each serving a specific purpose related to meditation and communal activities. The ground floor hosts shared spaces, such as a hall, living area, and kitchen. These areas are designed to encourage guests to come together and interact. In contrast, the upper floors provide various sleeping arrangements that can accommodate multiple visitors. This careful planning allows for a balanced experience, offering both communal engagement and opportunities for private reflection.

Materiality and Environment

Timber is the primary structural material used in the new design, reflecting sustainable building practices that align with local traditions. The use of timber contributes to the environmental efficiency of the facility while showcasing craftsmanship unique to the region. Existing stone walls also play a key role, acting as a visual reminder of the area’s historical context. Together, these materials help create an environment that is both welcoming and calming.

Wellness and Community Amenities

In addition to meditation spaces, guests can benefit from thoughtful amenities such as a sauna and a tea house. The sauna is strategically placed to connect with the surrounding landscape, enhancing the focus on wellness and relaxation. The tea house serves as a peaceful spot for visitors to unwind and engage with nature. This combination of community spaces and individual retreats allows for a balanced experience that promotes both social interaction and personal reflection.

Each space is designed with care, culminating in a silence room. This dedicated area encourages introspection and is surrounded by large windows that frame views of the forest and sky. It invites nature in, offering a serene backdrop for those seeking a deeper connection with their surroundings.
