The Portahome design promotes a new way of living that prioritizes sustainability and community. It aims to redefine the concept of home by creating flexible spaces that meet everyday needs while encouraging an environmentally friendly lifestyle. This approach invites people to simplify their lives and focus on the essentials, fostering a sense of connection to both their surroundings and each other.

Sustainable Architecture

At the heart of the Portahome idea is a commitment to sustainability, reflected in its material choices and energy use. The structure is built with precast concrete that includes reinforced fibers. This method not only speeds up construction but also enhances durability. It plays a significant role in reducing the environmental impact typically associated with conventional building materials and methods.

Flexible Living Spaces

Portahome features modular layouts that can be adjusted to suit the changing needs of the occupants. Each space is thoughtfully defined, including areas for living, dining, and sleeping. This clear separation allows for functional use while maintaining comfort. To maximize the limited space, furniture that can serve multiple purposes is integrated throughout the design, increasing usability and efficiency.

Natural Light and Community

Natural light is an important consideration in Portahome's design. Large windows and carefully positioned openings allow sunlight to fill the interior, creating warm and inviting spaces. This focus on natural elements contributes to a healthier living environment. Additionally, the design encourages community building by incorporating outdoor areas that promote social interaction, highlighting the need for connection in urban settings.

Transformative Features

Details in the design, such as the staircase that includes built-in storage and kitchen appliances, showcase a practical approach to space management. The living area can quickly change into extra sleeping space, demonstrating the home's adaptability. These thoughtful features support the concept of a home that balances functionality with comfort, allowing residents to adjust their living conditions as needed.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
