5 key facts about this project
UPthe EDGE is located at the summit of the Nemrut volcano and aims to create a connection between humanity and nature. It functions as both an observatory and a shelter, inviting visitors to experience the breathtaking landscape around it. The design draws inspiration from traditional yurt structures, incorporating their circular form while emphasizing sustainability and practicality.
Design Inspiration
The project reflects the shape of traditional yurts, which are significant to nomadic cultures in Asia Minor and the Far East. This circular design maximizes views and encourages visitors to engage with the surrounding environment. Elevating the observation structure allows for wide-ranging 360-degree vistas, showcasing the caldera’s features on one side and the expansive horizon of the province of Blitz on the other. The focus on this connection to nature is a key element of the design concept.
Construction Strategy
Building at such a high altitude presents several challenges. In response, the design incorporates lightweight and economical materials, specifically perforated metal sheets. These materials simplify the construction process and help reduce environmental impact. The foundation is made from locally sourced stone boxes that blend the structure into its site while minimizing transportation needs. This choice carefully considers the local context, ensuring the building aligns with its surroundings.
Nighttime Experience
Thoughtful design extends to the nighttime atmosphere of UPthe EDGE. The perforated structure allows light to filter through, creating a soft glow that can be seen from a distance. Inside, the observatory can serve as a bivouac, featuring curtains and self-sufficient lighting for overnight guests. This adaptability enhances visitor experiences, making the building not only a place for observation but also a comfortable shelter for those who wish to stay.
Unique Features
The integration of the existing funicular system aids in the transportation of construction materials to the site. This logistical approach emphasizes efficiency and sustainability. Careful design details ensure that as visitors interact with the space, they remain aware of the balance between human-made structures and the surrounding natural landscape. A striking aspect of the design is the visual link to the night sky, enriching the experience and inviting further exploration of the environment.
