The Stone E Barn Meditation Camp is located along a river in Latvia, serving as a retreat for meditation and reflection. The design takes advantage of the natural division created by the water, organizing the building into distinct yet connected units. This relationship with the landscape encourages a deep connection between users and their surroundings.

Materials and Form

Grey wood planking with a raw surface is used for new structural components, creating visual harmony with the existing barn. This material choice highlights the differences between old and new while maintaining a cohesive look. The minimalist style inside emphasizes the barn's natural beauty, fostering a peaceful atmosphere that supports meditation.

Spatial Organization

The building is arranged into clearly defined areas for administration, employee use, and visitor activities. This separation allows for interaction when needed but also offers spaces for solitude, which is essential in a retreat setting. A glass footbridge links the two sides, enhancing access and reinforcing the connection with the river, making it an important part of the experience.

Light and Interior Dynamics

Natural light plays an important role in the design. Voids in the ceilings and strategically placed skylights allow sunlight to enter, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This thoughtful use of light enhances the spatial experience, allowing visitors to feel connected to the outside landscape even while inside the building.

Cultural Integration

Elements of Latvian history are woven into the design, incorporating mythical symbols from pre-Christian times. These references enrich the functional spaces, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the local culture. The presence of these cultural elements fosters a sense of belonging and connection to the area, grounding the project in its geographical context.

Terraces on the upper floors provide views of the river, inviting visitors to engage with the calming landscape. These outdoor spaces create opportunities for quiet contemplation, adding to the overall experience of tranquility at the meditation camp.
