A City Above the City focuses on addressing the important issue of affordable housing in urban environments, specifically in London. The project introduces a modular building concept that aims to provide flexible living spaces for a wide range of residents. These include students, families, single-parent households, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Strategically located near train stations, the design enhances accessibility for the community while striving to reduce the negative impact of gentrification.

Design Approach

The modular design allows for adaptable living spaces that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of different groups. By offering a system that can be easily replicated in various urban locations, the project seeks to tackle the ongoing demand for affordable housing in busy city areas. It promotes a smart use of space while providing essential housing solutions.

Private and Public Spaces

In this layout, the project balances private and public areas. The private housing units come in various configurations: there are two-bedroom units for families, one-bedroom setups for entrepreneurs, and options for students that feature two or three bedrooms. Additionally, there are one-bedroom units for those living with disabilities. This range ensures that the design addresses the diverse living requirements of the community effectively.

The public areas are important too. They encourage interaction among residents and support a sense of community. Essential features include a lobby, communal dining and laundry facilities, and shared bathrooms, all designed to foster social connections. These shared spaces play a vital role in creating an environment where people feel supported and engaged.

Focus on Sustainability

Sustainability is a significant aspect of the design. The inclusion of green areas and vegetation helps enhance the living environment while also contributing positively to local ecology. By integrating these features, the project promotes a healthier and more enjoyable space for all residents.

Attention to details such as the positioning of green spaces enhances the overall atmosphere and encourages residents to come together. This focus on sustainability not only improves the aesthetic appeal but also nurtures a sense of community within the urban landscape.
