Iridescent Terracotta Cladding Forming A Conical Observation Structure Within A Wetland Ecosystem

Project in-detail

The conical structure clad in iridescent terracotta tiles offers a seamless blend of ecological sensitivity and cultural resonance, providing an elevated platform for observing the diverse wildlife of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
5 key facts about this project
01
Conical shape optimizes stability against wind while allowing natural light penetration.
02
Iridescent terracotta tiles reflect sunlight, enhancing the structure’s visual integration with the environment.
03
Walkway ramps and viewing areas minimize ecological impact on the wetland ecosystem.
04
Solar panels provide energy for lighting, promoting sustainability within the design.
05
Bird blinds are strategically placed to facilitate discreet wildlife observation.

The Iridescent Tower is an architectural observation platform located within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi. This design integrates function with environmental sensitivity, allowing visitors to engage with the diverse wildlife, particularly the region's flamingo population, while minimizing ecological disruption. The tower stands as a contemporary representation of cultural heritage through its use of materials and form, merging traditional architectural elements with modern techniques.

Unique Structural Design and Material Use

The Iridescent Tower features a conical structure that narrows towards its apex, providing both stability and an aesthetic presence within the landscape. The primary material employed is steel, which forms the structural framework. This choice ensures durability while permitting a lightweight design. The outer surface is clad in iridescent terracotta tiles. These tiles are designed to reflect light, contributing to the building's visual appeal while also offering thermal benefits by reducing heat absorption. The iridescent quality pays homage to the natural nuances of the wetlands and enhances the building's integration with its surroundings. This adaptability of materials not only addresses functional requirements but also embodies regional architectural traditions.

Visitors have access to various viewing platforms strategically placed for optimal wildlife observation. The thoughtful placement of bird blinds allows for discreet interaction with the environment, fostering a deeper connection between the observer and the natural setting. The design also incorporates solar panels at the top of the structure, which provide energy for lighting and digital displays, highlighting a commitment to sustainability.

Ecological Integration and Cultural Relevance

The tower's design reflects a deep understanding of ecological principles. By facilitating viewing experiences without disturbing the wildlife, the Iridescent Tower reinforces the importance of environmental conservation. The walking paths and viewing areas are constructed using concrete, providing structural support while maintaining a low profile to minimize disruption to the wetland ecosystem.

In its architectural approach, the project exemplifies a respectful nod to traditional Emirati building practices while innovating with modern technologies. The conical form and terracotta cladding evoke local materials and styles, creating a dialogue between past and present. This project illustrates how architecture can serve evolutionary roles, adapting to contemporary environmental and societal needs while honoring historical contexts.

Overall, the Iridescent Tower exemplifies a balanced approach to architecture that prioritizes sustainability and cultural relevance. Its integration with the natural environment and careful selection of materials set it apart as a significant architectural achievement.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
