High-Pressure Laminate Panels and Cross-Ventilation Define An Adaptable Modular Home

Project in-detail

Characterized by high-pressure laminate panels and natural cross-ventilation, the design creates an adaptable and efficient living environment that aligns with modern sustainability practices.
5 key facts about this project
01
High-pressure laminate panels provide enhanced durability and low maintenance requirements.
02
Natural cross-ventilation design reduces reliance on mechanical cooling systems.
03
Modular configuration allows for future expansion based on user needs.
04
Incorporation of rainwater harvesting systems promotes sustainable water management.
05
Charred wooden shingles contribute to fire resistance while improving aesthetics.
The ADDON project represents a modular housing innovation aimed at flexibility and sustainability. This architectural design presents an adaptable living environment that caters to evolving needs while integrating environmentally conscious practices. The structure consists of two main levels, allowing for multiple configurations and uses, from basic living spaces to more specialized areas such as offices or wellness zones.

The architecture uses high-pressure laminate panels for the exterior, contributing to a modern aesthetic and durability. A sheet metal roof ensures long-term protection against various weather conditions. The inclusion of thermal insulation maximizes energy efficiency and comfort, aligning with contemporary sustainability standards. Moreover, the project emphasizes water conservation through rainwater harvesting systems, and the integration of photovoltaic panels supports renewable energy generation.

Modular Structure and Functionality

One significant characteristic of the ADDON project is its modular structure. The design enables future expansion with additional modules as user needs change, making it suitable for diverse living situations. This approach reflects a commitment to providing functional housing solutions that can grow with the inhabitants, offering true customization of space.

Another unique aspect of this project is the focus on cross-ventilation. The strategic placement of windows and the thoughtful arrangement of layout support natural airflow, contributing to a healthier indoor environment while minimizing reliance on mechanical ventilation systems. This not only enhances energy efficiency but also promotes occupant well-being.

Sustainability and Community Integration

The ADDON project prioritizes sustainable living practices through its design choices. The use of recycled and low-impact materials throughout the construction process reinforces a dedication to reducing environmental impact. Additionally, the design fosters a sense of community by encouraging interaction among residents through communal spaces and shared resources.

The architectural layout promotes a connection to the surrounding environment, suggesting a harmonious relationship between the structure and its site. The project is not merely a collection of individual units but rather emphasizes the importance of collaborative living, where residents can engage with each other and their environment effectively.

For those interested in diving deeper into this modular housing project, exploring the architectural plans and sections will provide further insights into its intricate design ideas, functionality, and innovative use of materials. The architectural presentation showcases the thoughtful consideration behind every detail, making it a worthy subject for discussion and analysis in modern residential architecture.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
