Hand-Made Bricks and Community Hearths in a Seasonal Spa Retreat

Project in-detail

Hand-made bricks form the central hearth of a seasonal spa retreat, designed to enhance community engagement and connection to nature through its adaptable spaces and thoughtful integration of wellness features.
5 key facts about this project
01
Hand-made bricks serve as the primary material, enhancing both durability and connection to traditional craftsmanship.
02
A central hearth creates a communal space that encourages social interaction among occupants.
03
Seasonal adaptability allows the spa to transition effectively between winter warmth and summer cooling.
04
Interconnected fireplaces utilize air canals for efficient heating, improving energy use.
05
Distinct Northern and Southern galleries offer shaded resting areas and wellness-focused bathing spaces.

The DIY Country Spa at Wildflower Hill engages with its rural environment by promoting communal living and fostering a close connection with nature. Designed around the idea of shared experiences, the space encourages occupants to be more aware of their surroundings. This awareness is emphasized through a layout that adapts to the different seasons, allowing for varied use of the space throughout the year.

Materials and Structure

Hand-made bricks, wood, clay, and hay compose the main materials of the structure. These locally sourced components highlight a commitment to sustainability and reflect traditional building practices. Hand-made bricks provide strength while offering a tactile element. Wood adds warmth, both visually and structurally. Clay improves insulation and energy efficiency, and hay serves as an additional insulating material, enhancing comfort.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the spa enhances interaction among users. At the center lies a hand-made brick furnace, which serves as a gathering place during cold months, creating a warm atmosphere for socializing. The design incorporates air canals and interconnected fireplaces that allow for the circulation of warm air, encouraging people to engage with the physical space. Large windows and glass panels invite natural light and provide views of the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of openness and connection to nature.

Community Engagement

A strong sense of community is woven into the design. Visitors are invited to contribute firewood, fostering a connection with the space and each other. This hands-on approach to building creates a personal investment in the environment. As occupants gradually enhance the structure, they can tailor it to their own needs. This aspect of the design emphasizes the importance of collective well-being and encourages participation among users.

Design Details

Distinct areas, such as the Northern and Southern galleries, serve functional purposes while enhancing the overall experience. The Northern gallery offers shade during summer, providing a cool retreat from the heat. The Southern gallery features bathing spaces that utilize water and clay for therapeutic benefits. Every design detail is intended to support the occupants’ physical and emotional well-being, ensuring that the environment is comfortable and accommodating.
