The Co-Exist: Iceland Black Lava Fields Visitor Center is an architectural project located between Lake Mývatn and Hverfjall in Iceland. This facility serves as an educational and recreational hub, designed to enhance visitor engagement with the surrounding volcanic landscape. The architectural concept integrates two distinct forms – the Black Box and the White Surface – which symbolize the duality of the site and its geological history.

The Black Box houses exhibition spaces and educational areas, highlighting the cultural and geological importance of the lava fields. Its cubic form uses robust materials to establish a strong visual presence while reflecting the characteristics of the surrounding volcanic terrain. In contrast, the White Surface, characterized by its fluid and organic shape, wraps around the Black Box. This integration encourages a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces and provides visitors with an immersive experience of the landscape.

Design Approaches and Materiality

This project employs an innovative design that emphasizes sustainability and environmental integration. The Black Box is constructed using concrete and cement, materials that provide structural integrity and durability. The incorporation of ETFE, a lightweight and transparent material, in the White Surface allows for natural light penetration while maintaining insulation. The utilization of wood for interior finishes adds warmth and contrasts with the primary structure’s robustness.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility. 

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design.
