Geothermal Observation Tower Crafted from Larch and Reinforced Concrete in Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

Crafted from larch and reinforced concrete, the geothermal tower seamlessly integrates into the Icelandic landscape while serving as an observation and community space for visitors to engage with the surrounding terrain.
5 key facts about this project
01
Crafted from sustainably sourced larch wood to enhance durability and aesthetics.
02
Incorporates a geothermal heating system to minimize environmental impact.
03
Features an innovative bent A-frame design that blends with the surrounding landscape.
04
Multiple observation levels offer unique perspectives on the Icelandic terrain.
05
Natural stone used at the base reinforces the connection between structure and site.

The Cave Tower is a contemporary architectural project situated in Iceland’s distinctive landscape. The design draws inspiration from natural cave formations, merging the structural elements with the surrounding environment. This project serves as an observation tower, positioned to offer panoramic views of the rugged Icelandic terrain. Additionally, it functions as a community space, encouraging exploration and interaction with the natural resources of the area.

The architecture reflects a balance between aesthetic appeal and ecological mindfulness. The design integrates multiple levels that guide visitors through an evolving experience of the site, enhancing their understanding of the landscape.

Sustainable construction methods are employed throughout the project. The primary materials include larch wood for its durability, reinforced concrete for structural integrity, glass for transparency and connectivity between the interior and exterior, and natural stone for grounding the tower within its context. Each material has been carefully selected to ensure longevity while maintaining visual harmony with the surroundings.

Unique Design Approaches

The Cave Tower stands apart from typical observation structures through its innovative use of geothermal technology for heating, aligning with Iceland's geological characteristics. This sustainable heating system enhances the functionality of spaces without compromising environmental quality. The design of the observation platforms is distinct as they provide varying elevations and views, fostering social interaction among visitors.

Moreover, the incorporation of ergonomically designed spaces promotes not only viewing but also engagement with the environment, creating opportunities for visitors to appreciate the natural landscape in an interactive manner. The seamless integration of architecture and nature encourages a sense of place that emphasizes the cultural and natural heritage of Iceland.

Interaction with the Landscape

The architectural design emphasizes an immersive experience. The layered spatial organization invites visitors to ascend through the tower, revealing the environment progressively. Large glass façades allow natural light to flood the interior, enhancing the warm tones of the larch wood. The strategic use of natural stone at the base stabilizes the structure while creating a connection to the ground, effective in merging the architecture with the landscape effectively.

For those interested in exploring the intricacies of this project, detailed architectural plans, sections, and designs are available for review. These resources provide deeper insights into the unique architectural ideas that underpin the Cave Tower, illustrating the thoughtful approach taken to harmonize human activity with the environment.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
