The Dome is a contemporary architectural design for a coffee kiosk situated in an urban environment. The project embodies a modern approach to coffee retail, providing an inviting atmosphere while addressing the functional needs of a busy urban setting. The design draws inspiration from communal interaction and caters to the increasing demand for coffee consumption in a sustainable manner.

This coffee kiosk operates on dual principles of efficiency and sustainability. Its geodesic dome structure combines aesthetic appeal with optimal thermal performance, allowing it to function effectively in Northern European climates. The kiosk's form integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, creating a distinct visual identity while promoting social engagement among users.

Materiality is a key aspect of The Dome's design. The structure is primarily constructed from locally sourced spruce wood, providing durability and warmth in appearance. The use of graphited polystyrene as insulation enhances energy efficiency, addressing the project’s environmental impact. Solar panels on the roof further support sustainability by harnessing renewable energy and minimizing the kiosk's carbon footprint.

Unique Design Approaches

The design differentiates itself through its modular nature, allowing for rapid assembly and disassembly. Prefabricated, high-performance insulated panels are employed to ensure efficient construction, which can be erected in as little as one day. This flexibility makes The Dome suitable for various locations and adaptable to diverse settings.

The triangular module arrangement not only reinforces structural integrity but also facilitates effective rainwater runoff, crucial in urban environments. The strategic incorporation of large openings enhances accessibility and interaction, inviting customers to engage with both the space and the baristas.

Additionally, the design emphasizes a user-centric approach. The interior configuration streamlines workflows within the coffee preparation area and promotes an efficient service experience. The counter layout offers ample space for staff, contributing to quick service and customer satisfaction.

Technical Considerations

The Dome carefully integrates technical systems that support its operational requirements. Fresh water tanks and grey water systems are included for efficient water management, while an essential electrical framework with solar panel connections ensures sustainability. All electrical components are positioned to minimize visual impact and maintain the kiosk's aesthetic integrity.

The overall design strategy of The Dome addresses not only the immediate needs of a coffee shop but also broader implications for urban architecture. By prioritizing sustainable practices, efficient use of materials, and user experience, the project represents a thoughtful addition to the urban fabric.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
