Gabion Walls and Channel Glass Create a Calm Retreat for Creative Reflection

Project in-detail

Inspired by the molecular structure of Amber, gabion walls and channel glass create an inviting space for poets to find serenity and foster creativity within a tranquil retreat.
5 key facts about this project
01
Inspired by the molecular structure of Amber, the retreat’s design emphasizes duality in spatial organization.
02
Gabion walls serve as thermal mass to regulate the interior climate while allowing natural light to filter in.
03
Channel glass membranes diffuse light to create a comfortable working atmosphere for visiting poets.
04
The layout includes multiple accommodation types catering to both solo and group retreats.
05
Curved walls evoke natural forms, enhancing the connection to the tranquil surroundings.

The Pavilosta Poetry Retreat is located in Pavilosta, Latvia, designed to create a calm environment for creative work. This location draws inspiration from the town's coastal charm while being situated inland, allowing the structure to connect with the landscape in a meaningful way. The design concept is rooted in the molecular structure of Amber, a mineral linked to the region. This idea shapes both the appearance and function of the retreat, making it a space for reflection and creativity.

Design Concept
The organization of the space reflects the dual nature of Amber, exploring the balance between public and private areas. This allows guests to engage with one another while also finding solitude when needed. The layout encourages a sense of community among visitors and provides them with the necessary privacy to think and create.

Spatial Organization
The design comprises several important spaces, including a host's residence, dwellings for individuals and couples, accommodations for small groups, and shared spaces such as a multifunctional area and dining facilities. An open sky meditation space is also included. Each of these areas plays a role in fostering creativity and encouraging various activities. The thoughtful arrangement of these spaces promotes an easy transition between interaction and personal time.

Material Selection
The facade design uses a double membrane system for managing heat and light. Gabion walls are placed on the exterior to provide thermal mass, helping control the building's temperature while allowing natural light to enter. Inside, channel glass membranes serve to diffuse light, creating a pleasant atmosphere for the poets and other retreat members. The choice of materials balances comfort with responsiveness to the natural environment.

The building features curved walls that mirror natural forms, providing both visual interest and practical advantages. These design details enhance the experience, offering a dedicated space for creative expression in a setting that feels connected to its surroundings.
