Floating Workspace Constructed with Stainless Steel and Polystyrene for Emergency Relief

Project in-detail

Constructed with modular floating units of stainless steel and polystyrene, this workspace is designed for disaster research and relief, enhancing logistical capabilities in emergency situations.
5 key facts about this project
01
Modular units can be rapidly reconfigured to meet varying emergency needs.
02
Floating foundation designed to enhance buoyancy and stability in maritime settings.
03
Incorporates solar panels for energy independence and sustainability.
04
Features integrated water purification and desalination technologies.
05
Strategically located near Tuzla Shipyard to facilitate quick resource mobilization.
The OffSea project is an innovative architectural design aimed at creating a modular workspace for disaster research and relief in Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkey. This project addresses the critical need for flexible and functional spaces that can respond to disaster contexts, particularly in maritime settings. The design integrates advanced technologies, sustainability practices, and community-oriented spaces, ensuring effective resource mobilization and support systems in emergency situations.

Modular and Adaptive Design
The OffSea project features a combination of fixed and mobile units designed for versatility. The fixed unit includes seminar halls and dedicated workspace, serving as the central hub for disaster management activities. The mobile units, ranging in size from 20x20 ft to 10x10 ft, are equipped with solar panels and water purification systems. These units can operate independently or be reconfigured based on user needs, providing a dynamic environment that promotes collaboration and the efficient handling of resources. The architectural design also emphasizes connectivity, allowing mobile units to securely attach and relocate as necessary, optimizing their functional use in response to various emergencies.

Sustainability and Resilience
The OffSea project prioritizes sustainability in its architectural design through the use of materials such as stainless steel, concrete, glass, wood, and polystyrene. These materials contribute to the structural integrity and environmental sustainability of the project. The floating foundation systems, constructed from hollow core concrete slabs and polystyrene, ensure buoyancy and thermal insulation, enhancing the project’s resilience against potential flooding and sea-level rise. Rainwater harvesting and desalination technologies are integrated into the design, promoting self-sufficiency in water supply. Furthermore, outdoor spaces are carefully incorporated to facilitate community engagement and psychological well-being, creating an inviting atmosphere for users.

Functionality and Community Engagement
The functionality of the OffSea project extends beyond traditional workspace parameters. The design includes open-air spaces for communal activities, emphasizing the importance of social interaction in disaster scenarios. By integrating features such as yoga decks and outdoor cinemas, the project fosters a sense of community resilience. The strategic location adjacent to Tuzla Shipyard facilitates easy access to maritime resources essential for disaster response, thereby enhancing logistical capabilities.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
