Floating Observation Platforms Crafted from Local Ignimbrites and Steel in a Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Elevated platforms constructed from locally sourced ignimbrites and steel extend over the Nemrut Caldera, providing visitors with direct engagement to the volcanic landscape while enhancing their observation experience.
5 key facts about this project
01
Observation platforms are designed to mimic the geological formations of the caldera, integrating architectural form with natural topography.
02
Local ignimbrites are utilized for thermal regulation, enhancing the building's environmental performance.
03
Cantilevered walkways extend outward, providing unique viewing angles of the volcanic landscape.
04
The construction employs prefabricated steel elements for efficiency in assembly and site adaptation.
05
The transparent observation structure allows for seamless interaction between visitors and surrounding nature.
The "Nemrut Volcano Eyes" project is an architectural endeavor situated within the context of the Nemrut Caldera in Turkey. This project encompasses a series of observation platforms and cantilevered walkways designed to enhance the visitor experience while offering views of the volcanic landscape. The architecture embodies a connection to the geological history of the caldera, leveraging both aesthetic appeal and functionality.

The primary function of the project is to facilitate observation and engagement with the unique geological features of the caldera. These carefully designed spaces aim to immerse visitors in the natural environment while ensuring safety and accessibility. The structures are crafted to withstand the local climatic conditions, emphasizing durability without compromising the unique interactions with the surroundings that the design intends to promote.

The design incorporates several important elements. An observation building, characterized by a transparent and elevated form, serves as the core feature. This structure appears to float above the landscape, merging the built environment with the natural topography. The use of large glass panels allows for unobstructed views, creating a seamless connection between visitors and the surrounding site.

The cantilevered walkways extend outward from the main structure, designed to echo the flow of lava and the dynamic characteristics of the volcanic landscape. This design decision not only provides heightened perspectives but also incorporates pathways that encourage exploration of various vantage points.

One significant factor that differentiates this project from typical architectural undertakings is the integration of locally sourced materials. Concrete provides structural integrity, while ignimbrites, a type of volcanic stone, contribute both to the building's ecological stance and thermal performance. Prefabricated steel components enhance construction efficiency, while their visual language aligns with the overall architectural motif of the project.

Additionally, the project’s layout is a critical aspect of its design. The orientation of observation platforms is strategically planned to maximize viewpoints of the caldera's geologic features and surrounding terrain. Each pathway is designed to guide visitors through a narrative that embodies the volcanic history of the site, creating an educational aspect integrated into the experience.

In summary, the "Nemrut Volcano Eyes" project stands out due to its thoughtful integration with the geological context, use of sustainable materials, and functionality aimed at enhancing visitor engagement. Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
