The "Beacon of Refuge" is located along the EuroVelo 6 route in Romania, which connects the towns of Vidin and Ruse. This facility serves as a rest stop for cyclists, providing a space for relaxation and social interaction. The design focuses on blending the structure into the natural environment while offering essential amenities to enhance the cycling journey. It aims to create a welcoming atmosphere for travelers on a long ride.

Design and Functionality

The building features a wooden envelope that helps it blend with the surrounding scenery. Elevated above the ground, the structure resembles a lighthouse, making it a recognizable point for those traveling on the route. This design choice not only provides visibility but also protects the interior from environmental factors, ensuring users are safe and comfortable.

User Amenities

The "Beacon of Refuge" includes various amenities tailored for cyclists. It provides outdoor bike racks for secure storage, allowing cyclists to easily park their bikes. There are seating areas designed for socializing and resting. In addition, there are cooking facilities and shower amenities that contribute to the overall comfort of users, making it a complete stop for cyclists needing to refresh and recharge.

Material Considerations

Materials play an important role in the design of this facility. Wood is used extensively, both for its sustainability and to create a warm atmosphere. Plywood is chosen for its durability and flexibility, contributing to the building’s structure. The roof incorporates transparent polycarbonate that allows natural light to enter, improving the interior environment. Wood fiber insulation is used in the walls and ceiling to enhance energy efficiency, keeping the space comfortable throughout different seasons.

Renewable Energy Integration

A photovoltaic panel is integrated into the design, providing energy to the cabin. This aspect reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability, allowing the facility to generate its own energy and reduce its impact on the surroundings. The use of renewable energy fits well with current trends in building practices, emphasizing the importance of eco-friendly solutions.

An observation tower is a standout feature of the design. It offers visitors a chance to enjoy wide views of the river and the landscape, encouraging them to experience their environment fully. This interaction with the surroundings adds a unique aspect to the stay at the "Beacon of Refuge."
