The Tectonic Loop is an architectural project located in the Grjótagjá Cave area of Iceland. It serves as an innovative visitor center that enhances the natural landscape while providing functional spaces for education and engagement. The architecture is characterized by its close relationship with the surrounding geological features, integrating seamlessly into the rugged environment. By utilizing materials that reflect the local context, the project promotes sustainability and aims to minimize environmental impact.

Design Intent and Functionality

The primary function of the Tectonic Loop is to serve as an educational hub for visitors to learn about the unique geological formations of Iceland. The design includes a pavilion that houses an information center and social gathering areas, allowing visitors to understand the significance of their surroundings. In addition to the pavilion, the project features two major bridges, named “Bridge to America” and “Bridge to Europe,” that connect different viewing platforms throughout the site. These bridges invite exploration and provide opportunities for appreciation of the landscape.

The strategic placement of view platforms along the bridges is intended to highlight specific geological features, allowing users to engage with the environment. The pathways are designed to facilitate movement while minimizing disturbance to the natural terrain, further reinforcing the relationship between architecture and landscape.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility. 

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design.
