The Great Kemeri Bog Visitor Centre is located in the Great Kemeri Bog National Park in Latvia. It serves as an educational hub and a welcoming entry point for visitors exploring the natural landscape. The design emphasizes the arrival experience for nature enthusiasts, highlighting the connection between architecture and the surrounding ecosystem. With a focus on ecological sensitivity and community involvement, the visitor centre integrates thoughtfully into its unique setting.

Site Strategy

The site strategy integrates the visitor centre into the natural environment, converting a featureless clearing into an inviting space for learning and social interaction. The elevation of the building reduces its impact on the forest floor, demonstrating a commitment to protecting local wildlife. This design choice enhances the visitor experience and strengthens the bond between people and nature.

Design Elements

Architecturally, the centre maximizes natural light through careful orientation and large openings. This attention to light helps to lower the need for artificial heating and lighting, which aligns with sustainability goals. By using transparent materials and creating visual connections between the inside and outside, the design fosters a sense of openness, enriching the experience for visitors.

Materials and Construction

The project utilizes locally sourced materials, reflecting the rich architectural tradition of Latvia while incorporating modern prefabrication methods. This choice supports sustainability and ensures that the centre resonates with its surroundings. The use of regional resources underscores the commitment to ecological goals within the overall design.

Programmatic Arrangement

Inside, the visitor centre offers spaces that accommodate a range of functions. The layout is flexible, promoting educational initiatives and community engagement. It combines areas for large gatherings and quieter spaces, allowing for diverse interactions. This thoughtful arrangement enhances the visitor experience and reinforces the centre’s role as a resource for understanding the Great Kemeri Bog.

Natural Integration

A key feature of the visitor centre is its integration with the landscape, evident through elevated platforms and large windows. These elements invite visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the Great Kemeri Bog. The design encourages exploration and reflection, making the experience rich and engaging.
