The visitor center at Dimmuborgir Ridge in Iceland is located on a hill within a remarkable volcanic landscape. Its purpose is to provide information and support to those exploring the unique geological features of the area. The design aims to connect the built environment with the natural surroundings, creating a cohesive experience for visitors.

Spatial Organization

The center has a well-defined layout that separates public and private areas for different functions. The main entrance is positioned on the southern side, allowing easy access from a nearby road and parking area. Upon entering, visitors find themselves in a lobby and information center, which serves as a welcoming space to learn more about the surrounding landscape.

Central Void

One of the key features of the design is a central void that highlights the differences in height within the building. By incorporating spaces that are partially underground, the design takes advantage of the natural topography without sacrificing functionality. Ramps and stairs are integrated throughout, making it easy for visitors to move around the center and engage with the various spaces.

Public and Private Functions

The public area includes a coffee shop and a children’s play area. These spaces aim to encourage interaction among visitors. There is also a proposal for a gift shop, which would further enhance the amenities available on site. The private area is designed to accommodate essential facilities such as offices, restrooms, and single-bed rooms for those wanting to stay overnight.

Vertical Connection

The design features functional and ornamental stairs that lead up to a rooftop viewpoint. This aspect allows visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the landscape, enhancing their appreciation of the natural beauty around them. The stairs connect to the parking lot, providing straightforward access for all guests while respecting the site's terrain.

The ceiling in the underground social area is transparent, allowing natural light to enter and creating a connection to the surrounding landscape. This design element offers visitors a unique perspective on the geothermal features, emphasizing the distinctiveness of the Dimmuborgir area.
