The OBSERVATORY is a compact, prefabricated cabin set in the peaceful Ozolini estate forest near Riga, Latvia. It provides a space focused on silent meditation, encouraging users to step away from the distractions of modern life. The design emphasizes a connection with nature, allowing individuals to explore their inner thoughts while being immersed in the surrounding environment.

Interior Layout

The layout consists of six unique zones that cater to various activities. These include an entry/kitchen/storage area, a sleeping/eating/meditation space, upper and lower outdoor meditation decks, a staircase, and a raised platform with a fire pit. This arrangement promotes flexibility, offering both communal spaces for gatherings and secluded areas for personal reflection.

Materiality

The structure features a straightforward material palette. A framed timber structure provides strength and durability to the cabin. Thermal polycarbonate serves as a lightweight wall, allowing natural light to fill the interior while keeping it warm. Timber battens enhance the exterior, ensuring the building blends well with its forest surroundings.

Environmental Integration

Raising the cabin off the ground reduces its impact on the environment. It promotes airflow and allows for wildlife to pass underneath. This elevation also grants occupants wide views of the forest landscape. Inside, the raked ceiling adds a visual element that enriches the overall experience of the space.

Functional Design Features

The interior is designed to support the needs of one person, combining areas for cooking, sleeping, and meditation. A futon mattress can be stored vertically to free up space, making it easier for users to engage in various activities. The design also considers seasonal changes. During warm months, the cabin can be opened to allow fresh air, while in winter, insulation keeps it comfortable and cozy.

The OBSERVATORY captures the essence of minimal living, providing spaces that invite contemplation. The raised platform lets users observe the forest canopy, creating a tranquil environment for reflection and connection with the natural world.
