Elevated Retreat Crafted with Cross-Laminated Timber and Integrated Solar Solutions

Project in-detail

With a structure elevated above the forest floor and constructed from cross-laminated timber, this retreat integrates solar energy and rainwater harvesting systems to provide a sustainable environment for wellness and relaxation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated structure allows natural drainage and minimizes site disturbance.
02
Integration of solar panels enhances energy efficiency and sustainability.
03
Use of charred wooden shingles promotes fire resistance while blending with surroundings.
04
Adaptive reuse of local materials supports ecological practices and community involvement.
05
Natural light is maximized through strategically placed double-glazed windows.
"Haven on Earth" is an architectural project situated in the Serra da Estrela mountain range, specifically designed as a retreat space. It integrates built forms into the natural landscape, emphasizing a harmonious relationship with the environment. The project embodies the concept of a 'Pod,' offering a sanctuary that caters to mindfulness and wellness, characterized by minimalist design principles and sustainable practices.

The primary function of this architectural endeavor is to provide a space for relaxation and reflection. It consists of two main areas: a bedroom and a bathroom, organized for privacy and functionality. The elevated structure rests lightly on the ground, minimizing its ecological impact, which allows local flora and fauna to thrive. Large windows create a seamless connection with the surrounding landscape, fostering an immersive experience in nature.

The design employs a range of materials that support its environmental ethos. Renewable timber is utilized for external cladding and structural components, promoting sustainability. Cold extruded steel provides structural integrity while maintaining a lightweight footprint. Double-glazed windows enhance insulation, allowing natural light to penetrate and reduce artificial lighting needs. Additional features include solar panels for energy efficiency and varied insulation materials to optimize thermal performance.

Sustainable design practices are central to the project. The incorporation of rainwater harvesting and graywater recycling systems underscores a commitment to reducing the ecological footprint. The elevation of the structure allows for natural drainage patterns to remain intact, ensuring that the site remains ecologically balanced.

One distinguishing aspect of the "Haven on Earth" project is its focus on sensory experiences. By framing views and maximizing daylight, the architectural design encourages occupants to engage with their surroundings actively. The high ceiling and open spatial arrangements enhance airflow and light distribution, creating an inviting atmosphere conducive to mindfulness and relaxation.

The architectural plans and sections illustrate careful consideration of verticality and sight lines, allowing for a dynamic interaction between interior and exterior spaces. This intentional design approach not only optimizes natural light but also shapes the experience of those within the Pod.

Explore the project presentation for comprehensive details, including architectural plans, sections, designs, and ideas to understand how these elements coalesce into a functional and environmentally sensitive retreat. This analysis gives a glimpse into the "Haven on Earth" project, showcasing its unique architectural approach and commitment to sustainable living.
