### Overview
Located within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, "The Pinfold" aims to enhance visitor interactions with the natural environment while prioritizing ecological preservation. This setting is distinguished by its rich biodiversity and significant avian presence, prompting a design that promotes educational engagement while safeguarding wildlife habitats. The architectural intent reflects a thoughtful balance between human activity and the conservation of the delicate ecosystem that characterizes the wetlands.

### Spatial Configuration
The design addresses the site's unique topography through a carefully elevated architecture, facilitating movement across diverse landscapes, including wetlands and marshes. The incorporation of boardwalks ensures accessibility while mitigating impact on sensitive areas, thus preserving the ecological integrity of the environment. Central to the project is an observation tower that features multiple viewing decks, allowing for unobstructed sightlines and enhancing the visitor experience.

### Material Selection and Sustainability
Materials selected for "The Pinfold" play a crucial role in its context-sensitive design. Corten steel forms the structural framework, offering durability and resistance to climatic effects, while bamboo, a rapidly renewable resource, provides shading and connection to the surrounding landscape. Sustainable composite wood is used for decking, ensuring longevity and minimal maintenance. The integration of glass within the structure maximizes natural light, enhancing the interior experience without compromising wildlife visibility. This thoughtful materiality reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship while enhancing the overall user experience.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
