Elevated Observation Through Granite Slabs and Concrete Blocks in a Wetland Landscape

Project in-detail

Elevated on a stylobate and constructed from granite slabs and concrete blocks, the observation tower offers visitors an unobstructed view of the surrounding wetland, blending functionality with ecological sensitivity.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated observation decks enhance visibility of the wetland ecosystem.
02
Peripteral design incorporates classical elements with a modern twist.
03
Constructed with prefabricated concrete blocks for efficiency and strength.
04
Ramps ensure full accessibility for all visitors.
05
Boardwalk minimizes ecological impact while connecting the structure to nature.

The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Observation Tower is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, where it invites visitors to connect with the local ecosystem. Its design encourages interaction with nature while providing a functional space for birdwatching and observation. The building thoughtfully merges with its natural surroundings, offering an experience that highlights the beauty of the wetlands.

Architectural Design and Structure

The tower features a peripteral form and incorporates a colonnade that takes inspiration from classical Doric elements. This design reflects a blend of tradition and modernity. Two observation decks are part of the structure, with the main deck raised on a stylobate, which enhances visibility of the wetland. The choice of this elevated design allows visitors to enjoy panoramic views while maintaining accessibility for all.

Visitor Comfort and Amenities

Consideration for visitor comfort is evident throughout the design. The observation areas include benches and shaded spots where people can take a break and appreciate their surroundings. Ramps ensure that everyone can access the viewing platforms easily. Each element is designed to make the visitor experience more rewarding, creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages exploration.

Construction and Material Choices

The tower is built using prefabricated large concrete blocks, which offer both efficiency and strength. The floor surfaces of the observation decks are finished with granite slabs, chosen for their durability and resistance to weathering. Additionally, the pitched roof is made of ceramic tiles, contributing to the structure’s ability to handle heat effectively. These material choices support the overall durability of the design.

Connecting Boardwalk

An important aspect of the project is the boardwalk that connects the observation tower to the surrounding landscape. It is constructed from light metal screw piles and wood-polymer composite. This combination minimizes ecological impact while providing a sturdy pathway for visitors. The boardwalk allows people to explore the wetland area freely and experience the rich biodiversity up close.

The design of the observation tower emphasizes functionality while respecting the environment. Its thoughtful details enhance the connection between people and nature, creating a space that encourages curiosity and appreciation of the wetland.
