5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes vacuum glazing to enhance energy efficiency in a harsh climate.
02
Incorporates an icosahedral shape for unique structural integrity and aesthetics.
03
Features a central circulation area that promotes visitor interaction and exploration.
04
Set in a volcanic landscape, enhancing the connection between nature and architecture.
05
Combines educational exhibits with café services to enrich the visitor experience.

The Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop is an architectural project located in the Hverfjall region of Iceland, designed to function as a stop for tourists exploring the area's unique volcanic landscape. The design merges seamlessly with its natural surroundings and serves both as a café and a visitor center, offering amenities for comfort and warmth against the often harsh climatic conditions.

The coffee shop is primarily inspired by geometric forms, specifically the icosahedron, which informs its structural design and overall aesthetic. This shape not only enhances the visual appeal but also optimizes thermal performance. The integration of materials such as vacuum glazing and sandwich panels ensures energy efficiency while allowing for ample light penetration, creating a bright and welcoming interior environment.

Unique Design Approaches

The architectural design emphasizes ecological sustainability while maintaining a focus on visitor experience. The use of vacuum glazing minimizes heat loss, a critical feature in an area characterized by rapidly changing weather. This material choice, alongside stainless steel for structural elements, reflects a commitment to durability and resilience, allowing the building to withstand the region's environmental challenges.

The layout promotes interaction with the surrounding landscape. Open interior spaces facilitate views of the Icelandic scenery, bridging the indoor and outdoor experiences for visitors. There are strategically placed seating areas that provide an unobstructed perspective of the volcanic terrain, enhancing the overall ambiance and connection to nature. The design incorporates a central circulation area, promoting flow throughout the space and encouraging exploration.

Spatial Organization and Function

The spatial arrangement of the coffee shop is methodical, with areas designated for relaxation, socialization, and education. The seamless flow from the café to an exhibition space enhances the visitor experience, as educational displays related to the local geology are accessible to patrons. This enhances the practical function of the coffee shop beyond being merely a refreshment stop; it serves as a learning hub.

Exploring architectural plans and sections further reveals how the geometric approach translates into structural integrity and comfort. The careful balance of form and function demonstrates the relevance of thoughtful architectural design in a sensitive ecological context. For those interested in a deeper understanding of the architectural ideas and variations presented in this project, reviewing the detailed architectural designs and sections is highly recommended to appreciate the innovative features in more depth.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
