Cylindrical Cabins with Cross-Laminated Timber and Weathered Concrete Embracing Natural Reflection

Project in-detail

Cylindrical cabins constructed from cross-laminated timber and weathered concrete provide a serene retreat that encourages reflection and engagement with the surrounding forest and lake.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cylindrical design maximizes scenic views from each cabin.
02
Integration of passive heating and cooling techniques enhances energy efficiency.
03
Local timber is sourced from sustainable forests, minimizing environmental impact.
04
Large glazed facades optimize natural light while offering unobstructed vistas.
05
Elevated positioning of cabins fosters a seamless connection with the forest canopy.
The Periscope project is an architectural retreat located near Gozjā "Little Lake" in Latvia. This design emphasizes integration with the natural environment, allowing visitors to experience a blend of relaxation and observation. The project embodies concepts of meditation and retreat, offering a sanctuary that encourages introspection and connection to the surrounding landscape.

The architecture consists of a series of cabins positioned among the trees, designed to vary in elevation and create a dynamic interaction with the terrain. Each cabin features cylindrical forms with large glazed facades, promoting natural light and panoramic views of the forest and lake. The use of local timber and weathered concrete reflects a commitment to sustainability, ensuring that the materials resonate with the natural setting.

Unique Design Approaches

The Periscope distinguishes itself through its innovative approach to spatial configuration and engagement with the natural environment. The elevated cabins provide unobstructed views, facilitating a deeper connection with the surrounding landscape. The design strategically utilizes passive heating and cooling techniques, enhancing energy efficiency while ensuring visitor comfort.

Natural light is a critical element of the design, with openings oriented to maximize sunlight throughout the day. This focus on light not only enhances the interior experience but also reduces reliance on artificial lighting, aligning with sustainable practices. The integration of solar panels into the roofs reinforces the project’s commitment to environmental awareness.

Functional Aspects of the Design

The Periscope project serves multiple functions, with an emphasis on rest, reflection, and community engagement. Each cabin promotes individual retreat while encouraging social interaction in shared spaces. The organic layout of pathways connecting the cabins invites exploration and engagement with the landscape, enhancing the overall experience of the site.

Furthermore, the proximity to Gozjā "Little Lake" offers opportunities for various recreational activities, including kayaking and fishing. The combination of architectural design and natural features creates a multifaceted environment that caters to both solitary reflection and communal experience.

For a detailed examination of the architectural plans, sections, and designs that illustrate these concepts and functional aspects, readers are encouraged to explore the project presentation further. The interplay of design ideas within The Periscope provides essential insights into contemporary architectural practices that prioritize harmony with nature.
