The architectural project "A Casinha Vermelha" serves as a yoga retreat located in the Serra do Estrela mountains of Portugal. This design unifies functionality with an aesthetic that aligns with its natural surroundings. The structure features a dual-level configuration, comprising an elevated yoga studio and a semi-buried living space, optimized to meet the needs of wellness activities while remaining sensitive to the landscape.

The primary function of the retreat is to create a serene environment for yoga and meditation. The building emphasizes open, flexible spaces designed to facilitate a connection with nature. Views are maximized through large windows and sliding doors, encouraging outdoor engagement. The strategic placement of spaces fosters a fluid transition between indoor and outdoor environments, an essential aspect of mindfulness practices.

The use of red clay brick for the upper level provides a warm aesthetic and thermal efficiency, while fair-faced concrete on the lower level adds durability and a modern touch. The project incorporates sustainable materials, including cork, which is utilized in flooring for sound insulation, and bamboo shutters that enhance natural ventilation. This careful selection of materials reflects a commitment to sustainability and regional vernacular architecture.

Innovative design approaches include a curvilinear roof shape that not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also manages water runoff and climate control effectively. The green roof enhances biodiversity and contributes to thermal insulation. Furthermore, a rainwater harvesting system integrates environmental responsibility into everyday use, highlighting the retreat's dedication to sustainability.

This project distinguishes itself through its integration with the surrounding environment. Outdoor spaces are seamlessly connected to both the living area and the yoga studio, allowing users to engage directly with nature. The design prioritizes openness and light, fostering a sense of tranquility throughout the space. The architectural decisions made in the layout enhance user experience by promoting well-being and community interaction in a setting that naturally inspires mindfulness.
