5 key facts about this project
01
Curvilinear shape maximizes panoramic views of the vineyards.
02
Extensive use of laminated glass enhances connectivity with the landscape.
03
Sustainable design incorporates aluminum solar control systems for energy efficiency.
04

05
Native vegetation integrated into landscaping enriches the natural environment.
The Ring of Twilight is an architectural project designed as a modern tasting room situated in the picturesque landscape of Quinta do Monte d'Oiro, an area known for its remarkable sunsets and rich vineyards. This project serves as both a functional space for wine tasting and a gathering point for visitors, reflecting the essence of the local wine culture while enhancing interaction with the natural environment.

Spatially, the design incorporates a circular form that allows for a panoramic view of the vineyards, providing an open and inviting atmosphere. The expansive use of floor-to-ceiling glass walls dissolves the boundaries between the interior and the exterior, fostering a seamless connection with the surrounding landscape. The design showcases an intelligent layout that prioritizes both visual and physical access to the natural beauty of the area.

Unique Design Approaches

A distinctive feature of the Ring of Twilight is its integration of curvilinear forms, which are employed to evoke the organic aspects of the landscape. This form not only enhances the visual aesthetics of the tasting room but also serves to engage visitors as they move around the space, creating a fluid experience that mirrors the flowing nature of the nearby vineyards. The circular layout allows for multiple areas of engagement, ensuring that every visitor can experience sunset views from different perspectives.

Sustainable design principles are a prominent consideration throughout the project. The use of materials such as concrete provides structural stability, while laminated safety glass ensures bright interiors without compromising safety. Marine plywood is utilized in flooring, delivering durability, and aluminum systems help regulate solar gain, enhancing the building's overall energy efficiency.

Architectural Features and Functions

The key architectural elements include the curvilinear exterior that embodies the natural topography and the cleverly designed outdoor spaces. Accessibility has been prioritized with the incorporation of gentle slopes and ramps, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors. An expansive terrace invites guests to enjoy outdoor tastings, blurring the boundaries of indoor and outdoor experiences.

The landscaping around the Ring of Twilight complements the architecture, featuring indigenous vegetation that harmonizes with the aesthetic of the vineyards. This design approach transforms the tasting room into not just a venue for wine tasting but a holistic experience that connects visitors with the land and the process of winemaking.
