Curvilinear Community Space Crafted From Cross-Laminated Timber Panels and Natural Wood Finishes

Project in-detail

Curved walls of cross-laminated timber contribute to a sustainable community space designed for interaction and engagement within a natural setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curved design minimizes waste by utilizing the efficiency of modular construction.
02
Cross-laminated timber panels provide enhanced stability while maintaining a lightweight structure.
03
Charred wooden shingles offer both aesthetic appeal and increased durability against the elements.
04
The structure's open layout encourages social interaction and adaptable use cases.
05
Natural light is maximized through strategically placed openings in the curved walls.

The project "A Timber Bowl" exemplifies a contemporary approach to architecture through the innovative use of cross-laminated timber (CLT). It integrates modern building practices with traditional timber construction, creating a circular structure that is both functional and aesthetically cohesive. This design aims to serve as a multi-functional gathering space, seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings.

Spatial Arrangement and Function

The architectural design features a circular form that encourages social interaction and flexibility in use. The interior layout consists of varied seating arrangements, accommodating different groups and activities. This adaptability is a key function, allowing the space to transform based on the needs of the users, whether it is for community gatherings, workshops, or quiet retreats. The use of CLT provides an open, unobstructed interior, creating a light-filled environment that promotes engagement and activity.

Innovative Use of Materials

What sets "A Timber Bowl" apart from conventional projects is its focused use of sustainable materials and advanced construction techniques. The project primarily utilizes cross-laminated timber, which enhances structural stability while supporting sustainability efforts in architecture. The design incorporates dry wood-wood connections to facilitate quick assembly and disassembly, further demonstrating a thoughtful approach to material usage. This emphasis on modularity not only contributes to efficient construction but also supports the sustainable ethos of the project, reducing waste and environmental impact.

Architectural Details and Integration with Nature

The architectural details of "A Timber Bowl" reflect a commitment to both form and function. The curved seating integrates naturally with the circular design, promoting a sense of community while providing comfort. Large openings throughout the structure allow natural light to permeate the space, enhancing user experience and reducing reliance on artificial lighting. The exterior texture, coupled with a dark wood finish, allows the building to blend harmoniously with its surrounding environment, reinforcing the project's connection to nature.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
