The Quinta do Monte D'oiro Wine Tasting Room is an architectural project designed to enhance visitor engagement with the vineyard while providing a functional space for wine tasting. Situated among scenic hills and lush vineyards, the structure embodies a design philosophy that emphasizes harmony with the environment and local architecture. The project serves as both a tasting venue and a representation of the region's winemaking heritage.

The core function of the tasting room is to facilitate an optimal wine tasting experience, allowing guests to appreciate the wines produced on-site while enjoying the picturesque landscape. The layout is thoughtfully designed to include an open-plan tasting area, an accessible entrance courtyard, and a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces to create a sense of connection with the surroundings.

The architectural design employs materials such as pale white brick, clay tiles, and vertical wood elements that resonate with traditional Portuguese architecture, offering a modern interpretation that is visually cohesive with the vineyard landscape. Large glass doors provide unobstructed views of the vineyard, reinforcing the relationship between the inside of the structure and the natural environment. This integration of materials and form is key to creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

One unique aspect of the project is its approach to sustainable design. The use of energy-efficient systems, including insulation and strategic window placement, reduces energy consumption and enhances visitor comfort. Furthermore, the incorporation of natural signage and landscaping elements ensures that the design is not only functional but also visually integrated into its setting.

Attention to detail is also evident in the interior design choices. Curved wood shelving serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, embodying the winery's craft while providing a practical solution for displaying products. The design prioritizes simplicity and elegance, avoiding unnecessary embellishments in favor of clean lines and a refined material palette.

This project effectively addresses the needs of wine tourism while honoring local traditions and the natural environment. The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
