Curved Laminated Trusses and Natural Light Define a New Urban Hub

Project in-detail

Curved laminated wooden trusses create a distinctive architectural feature in a new urban hub designed for exhibitions and public engagement, while ample natural light enhances interaction and connectivity with the surrounding landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curved laminated wooden trusses create a distinctive structural design.
02
Skylights enhance natural light and visual connection to the outdoors.
03
The east façade opens to reveal original architectural elements.
04
Integration of public and exhibition spaces fosters community engagement.
05
Concrete footings provide stability for the unique roof configuration.

The Ķīpsala Auditorium Expansion adds a new dimension to the Riga Expo Center, located where it can interact with the surrounding city. This expansion enhances Hall 1 by introducing a new Auditorium that connects to the existing structure but also stands on its own. The overall design concept focuses on merging new and old elements, creating a cohesive identity for the building.

Connectivity and Interaction

The design emphasizes connectivity along the east façade, where the new Auditorium engages directly with Hall 1. Opening the east wall reveals the structure’s original features and fosters a connection between the two buildings. A shared circulation area provides easy access to the auditorium. This layout encourages visitors to move freely between spaces, making the venue more inviting throughout the day and not just during events.

Spatial Orientation

The project’s spatial organization creates a welcoming setting that connects to the historical center of Riga and the nearby Daugava River. Both the new Auditorium and Hall 1 feature outward-facing façades. This orientation invites visitors to enjoy views of the city and river, integrating the space into its urban surroundings. It encourages interaction with the environment, enhancing the experience for those who visit.

Architectural Language and Materiality

The roofs of the new Auditorium are designed to flow into a single continuous surface that leads to the Café and Entrance area. This design choice serves practical purposes and acts as a focal point for visitors. The architecture reflects local timber traditions, providing a modern interpretation that respects Kipsala's historical context while affirming the new structure's distinct character.

A significant detail of the Auditorium is the use of curved glued laminated wooden trusses, supported by concrete footings. This choice of materials balances visual appeal with structural durability. The combination showcases the project’s thoughtful approach to both design and functionality.
