Curved Form of Charred Wood Shingles Enhanced by Green Roof for Modular Urban Living

Project in-detail

A twisting form clad in charred wooden shingles and topped with a green roof creates a flexible living space designed for urban residents.
5 key facts about this project
01
Twisting form enhances spatial dynamics and promotes natural ventilation.
02
Green roof design supports biodiversity and stormwater management.
03
Prefabricated modular units allow for rapid assembly on-site.
04
Integration of photovoltaic panels achieves energy efficiency.
05
Use of charred wood shingles emphasizes fire resistance and sustainability.

The architectural design project "Twist Out of the Box" exemplifies a contemporary approach to modular housing that prioritizes functionality and sustainability. Located within an urban context characterized by increasing housing demands, the project aims to offer a viable solution to affordable living without compromising quality or aesthetics. This project utilizes a modular construction methodology, which facilitates efficient assembly and enhances the versatility of housing solutions. The design creates a unique residential environment that integrates living, working, and communal spaces seamlessly.

Unique Structural and Aesthetic Approach

"Twist Out of the Box" is distinguished by its innovative twisting form, which not only contributes to its visual identity but also enhances spatial efficiency. The twisting segments create dynamic living spaces that promote interaction while increasing natural light and ventilation within the interiors. This approach diverges from typical modular designs by incorporating significant architectural expression, offering an alternative to conventional box-like structures.

The integration of a green roof is another notable aspect of the project. This feature supports biodiversity while providing insulation and assisting with rainwater management. The design also emphasizes the use of sustainable materials. Key elements include wood for structural framing, glass for maximizing daylight, and steel for structural integrity. Photovoltaic panels are integrated into the roof structure, ensuring that the home is energy-efficient and aligned with contemporary ecological standards.

Functional Layout and Adaptability

The internal configuration of "Twist Out of the Box" is carefully planned to accommodate various living arrangements. The open-plan layout fosters social engagement and encourages collaboration among residents. The layout includes multifunctional areas such as a combined kitchen and dining space designed for both everyday use and larger gatherings. Additionally, balcony spaces extend the living areas into the outdoor environment, providing opportunities for urban gardening and recreation.

The modularity of the design allows for future modifications, accommodating changing resident needs. This adaptability is essential in contemporary housing design, where flexibility is increasingly important. Moreover, the inclusion of systems for greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting underscores the project’s commitment to sustainability, further enhancing its appeal in the realm of modern architecture.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
