Shaded spaces promote visitor contemplation and engagement with the landscape.

The Rammed Arcth is located in Merapi, Indonesia, and explores new possibilities in rammed earth design. Serving as a resting point, it offers visitors a wide view of the Merapi volcano. The overall design focuses on connecting with the surrounding landscape, encouraging reflection on the site’s geological history shaped by volcanic activity.

Materiality

The project incorporates local volcano soil, linking the structure directly to its environment. This material choice is significant as it showcases the geological features of the area and supports sustainability through the use of local resources. The rammed earth patterns are visually integrated into the pavilion, reinforcing its identity while ensuring durability.

Spatial Dynamics

Three curved masses form the core of the pavilion, creating a reciprocal self-supporting canopy. This design allows for varying light conditions and a sense of openness within the space. The curvature directs views toward the Merapi peak, enhancing the experience for visitors by blending the structure with its picturesque surroundings.

Atmospheric Quality

The arrangement promotes a welcoming atmosphere that balances function with visual appeal. Shaded areas provide comfort, encouraging visitors to relax and engage with the environment. The play of light and shadow fosters a calm setting, deepening the connection between the pavilion and its landscape.

Details of the design reveal the thoughtful transitions between inside and outside spaces. The rammed earth enclosures flow naturally, echoing the shapes of the surrounding land.
